I was staying at Sunnyvale a few days ago and I got only a brief amount of time to explore SF. Hence, I didn't get to experience the "tech culture" in SF that you described so beautifully: reminds me a lot of all the things I've read and heard about Silicon Valley. However, since I travelled to Market Street and south SF via BART, I did experience the other side that you mentioned. I'd like to explore the city better on my next trip.
